Can Someone Fake My Signature So Well Even an Expert Can’t Tell?<\/h1>\n

Well, the answer is no.<\/span><\/p>\n

The point of being an expert and the point of handwriting being a forensic science for hundreds of years is that you are almost bulletproof… even to the best forgers. <\/span>There is a caveat: you are bulletproof when it comes to handwriting on documents, wills, testaments, and letters.<\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t deal with baseball cards. <\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t deal with scribbles. <\/span><\/p>\n

I don’t even deal with paintings very often.<\/p>\n

It’s true that there are professional forgers who have 10,000 hours of mimicking a celebrity’s signature. <\/span>I’m not talking about that. <\/span>I’m talking about a page of a handwritten will and testament, which is what we call a holographic<\/strong> will. <\/span>When it comes to wills, I’m 100% accurate because there is enough evidence to review. There are <\/span>enough movements and data points to actually tell one version of a signature from another.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That doesn’t mean that every case is easy. Let’s say the signature has only two letters—that is a little harder. We call that a symbolic signature.<\/strong> <\/span>With symbolic signatures, I think it takes dozens and dozens of writings to see the differences. And sometimes the ink, the striations, and the pen lifts have a lot to do with how accurate the signature in question is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Remember, a signature is a number of data points.<\/strong> <\/span><\/h4>\n

Think about a combination lock. If you have a combination lock with only two numbers, people can guess them. <\/span>But if that lock has 12 numbers, it becomes really complicated. I<\/span>f a signature hump in ink has 28 different movements, it becomes really hard to get 28 combinations correct. <\/span><\/p>\n

So, again, the answer to your question is no. <\/span>You will not be able to be so good at forging a signature that a real expert can’t prove it’s forged.\u00a0 <\/span>(But we have a business because people keep trying anyway.) <\/span>Likewise, if a signature is authentic, a real expert, a court-qualified expert with years of experience, should be able to tell it’s authentic. <\/span><\/p>\n

And that’s when you hire them, and they come and they testify for you in court.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
