It&#8217;s simply three or four hours of work. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The client sends over all the documents they have access to; we review them and provide our preliminary opinion. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don&#8217;t have to go to court. We don&#8217;t have to go look under a microscope or spend hours and hours making pretty exhibits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&#8217;ve also had cases that are $10,000 to $30,000 because they&#8217;re so complicated. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have to go to court. You&#8217;ve got to take pictures. You&#8217;ve got to look at hundreds of documents and sort through 500 checks of the decedent, or the wife of the decedent, or the accused. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, it really depends on the complexity of your case. It&#8217;s not an interchangeable thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What Are the Dangers of Choosing the Handwriting Expert With the Lowest Rates?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the challenges we have is that unless you&#8217;re an attorney and you&#8217;ve dealt with expert witnesses and you&#8217;ve dealt with expert testimony, you might assume, \u201cOh, it&#8217;s just a handwriting expert. I can tell it&#8217;s a forgery. That&#8217;ll cost around 600 bucks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust me, there&#8217;s no $600 legal expert in the US that you want to hire.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There might have been in 1985, when prices were lower; in 2026, hiring a $600 legal expert is like going under the knife with a $600 plastic surgeon. It&#8217;s not worth the risk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(I had a colleague who worked well into his eighties and never raised his prices from the 1980s\u2014a wonderful exception.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, these days, for the most part, a good handwriting expert will charge $600 or $700 an hour, and their staff will charge less. By the time you walk out the door, you&#8217;re typically looking at $3,000 to $8,000 for a complete case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want someone who can do it right, analyze it right, follow protocol, and get you a letter that&#8217;s so strong with demonstrative exhibits that the other side says, &#8220;We can&#8217;t win this,\u201d that&#8217;s what you&#8217;re paying for. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Is It Worth the Money to Hire a Qualified Handwriting Expert?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you hire a good, qualified expert witness, they\u2019re going to take that report and give it to the opposing attorney. The opposing attorney is going to give it to another handwriting expert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the report is done well, the other expert will say, \u201cYou know what? He&#8217;s right. You can&#8217;t win this. I&#8217;ve never had to get brain surgery or heart surgery, but I wouldn&#8217;t hire the cheapest brain surgeon I could. I wouldn&#8217;t hire the cheapest heart surgeon. I would hire the best I could afford because I want to live.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you care about your case and there are millions of dollars on the line, don&#8217;t go for the cheapest\u2014or the highest, just because they&#8217;re the most expensive. Go for the best quality within your budget. And if you&#8217;re already spending $20,000 or $30,000 to fight this lawsuit against your ex-wife, your ex-business partner, or your brothers and sisters, what&#8217;s another five grand? Get somebody qualified to actually do the job properly.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Why Do Some Handwriting Experts Charge Less for the Same Job?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The worst thing that can happen is you hire a cheap expert witness\u2014someone who says, \u201cHey, I&#8217;m a one-man band. I don&#8217;t have an assistant.
