People often assume a handwriting expert is like a mechanic. They think they can just call and ask the office, “How much does a brake installation cost?”<\/span><\/p>\n But just like a mechanic, we often can’t give a full assessment of all the services, care, and time that your case needs until we open it up and peek under the “hood”.<\/p>\n We’ve had cases over the years for $2,500. It’s simply three or four hours of work. <\/span><\/p>\n The client sends over all the documents they have access to, we look at the documents, and we give our preliminary opinion. <\/span><\/p>\n We don’t have to go to court. We don’t have to go look under a microscope. We don’t spend hours and hours making pretty demonstrative exhibits.<\/span><\/p>\n We’ve also had cases that are $10,000 to $30,000 because they’re so complicated. <\/span><\/p>\n You have to go to court. You’ve got to take pictures. You’ve got to look at hundreds of documents. You’ve got to sort through 500 checks of the decedent, or the wife of the decedent, or the accused. <\/span><\/p>\n In short, it really depends on the complexity of your case. It’s not an interchangeable thing.<\/span><\/p>\n One of the challenges we have is that unless you’re an attorney and you’ve dealt with expert witnesses and you’ve dealt with expert testimony, you might assume, \u201cOh, it’s just a handwriting expert. I can tell it’s a forgery. That’ll be 600 bucks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Trust me, there’s no $600 legal expert in the US that you want to hire. It just doesn’t exist. <\/span><\/p>\n There might have been in 1985 when there were lower prices; in 2026, hiring a $600 legal expert is like going under the knife with a $600 plastic surgeon. It’s not worth the risk.<\/span><\/p>\n (With a few exceptions: for example, my friend Jess Dyn was working until he was in his early 80s, and I know he never raised his prices from the 1980s. He probably did take cases at a couple of hundred an hour.) <\/span><\/p>\n However, for the most part, these days a good handwriting expert is going to be $600 or $700 an hour, and their staff is going to charge less than that. By the time you get out the door, you’re paying 3, 4, 5, 6, or $8,000.<\/span><\/p>\n If you want someone who can do it right, analyze it right, follow protocol, and get you a letter that’s so strong with demonstrative exhibits that the other side says, \u201cOh my God, I can’t win this,\u201d that’s what you’re paying for. <\/span><\/p>\n When you hire a good, qualified expert witness, they\u2019re going to take that report and give it to the opposing attorney. The opposing attorney is going to give it to another handwriting expert.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n If the report is done well, the other expert will say, \u201cYou know what? He’s right. You can’t win this. Apparently, the evidence is overwhelming.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n If you go for a cheap handwriting expert or someone who\u2019s not qualified, they\u2019re going to write you a one-page letter that says, \u201cOh, I think it’s a forgery,\u201d or \u201cI think it’s authentic,\u201d with no basis of opinion. <\/span><\/p>\n The few thousand dollars you saved is going to be tens of thousands of dollars<\/strong> spent in the long run, because you’re going to have to go to court. <\/span><\/p>\n At court, that cheap expert witnesses is going to have to explain their opinion- and if they are not convincing and you lose the case, the few thousand dollars you saved is now hundreds of thousands of dollars<\/strong> lost.<\/span><\/p>\n If you want to win, you’re going to hire the best you can afford. I’ve never had to get brain surgery or heart surgery, but I wouldn’t hire the cheapest brain surgeon I could. I wouldn’t hire the cheapest heart surgeon. I would hire the best I could afford because I want to live.<\/span><\/p>\n If you care about your case and there are millions of dollars on the line, don’t go for the cheapest\u2014and don’t go for the highest just because they’re the most expensive. Go for the best quality within your budget. And if you’re already spending $20,000 or $30,000 to fight this lawsuit against your ex-wife, your ex-business partner, or your brothers and sisters, what’s another five grand? Get somebody qualified to actually do the job properly.<\/span><\/p>\n The worst thing that can happen is you hire a cheap expert witness\u2014someone who says, \u201cHey, I’m a one-man band. I don’t have an assistant. I’m really overwhelmed. <\/span><\/p>\n I don’t pay any assistants to help me keep my cases organized or help with my reports and exhibits, so I’m doing all the work myself. <\/span><\/p>\n Plus I have way too many clients to keep them all straight and limited time to spend actually analyzing their cases.<\/span><\/p>\n But I’m really cheap!\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n Not only do they have limited resources for your case, a lot of times, they\u2019re also just going to say what you want them to say so that they can land you as a client to make their quota.<\/span><\/p>\n Then you get the opinion you want, spend another $30,000 on an attorney, go to court, and realize, \u201cOh my God, my expert witness didn’t tell me the truth because he didn’t take the time. I undercharged it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n How are you going to get a great heart surgeon if you’re saying, \u201cHey, I don’t want to pay you $700 for your heart surgery. Don\u2019t get the nurses. Don\u2019t get the anesthetic. I just want heart surgery, but I want it really cheap.\u201d Don\u2019t be that guy.<\/span><\/p>\n Call our office.
