Well, of course they do. And here’s the reason a judge would have an independent expert witness testify to something rather than do it themselves: they don’t want their cases overturned.<\/span><\/p>\n

In criminal cases, if a judge is eventually found incompetent, all the cases he presided over could be overturned, and people could be released from jail. You see that all the time when corruption is discovered. <\/span>Another way to ensure that a verdict is not overturned is to rely on expert witness testimony. Can a judge tell whether a signature is real? If the judge makes a mistake in his or her attempt at handwriting analysis, the verdict can be overturned. A third-party forensic document examiner provides independent validation of the evidence, stating whether a signature or document is authentic. <\/span> And this isn’t unique to handwriting analysis; it applies across many forensic disciplines. People, especially judges, like experts. Juries like experts, especially independent experts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Independent Expertise Matters<\/h3>\n

You can assume that the investigating lab tech has no skin in the game. They don’t really care whether this person goes to jail or not.
