The Story Behind the “Discovery”<\/h2>\n

Stern<\/em> paid 9.3 million Deutschmarks for the diaries\u2014a sum that reflected both the supposed historical value and the confidence of the experts involved. A well-known British historian vouched for their authenticity. The Sunday Times bought the rights to publish them. Newsweek even ran a cover story. The world was ready to rewrite history based on these newly unearthed documents.<\/p>\n

The source of the diaries was a Stuttgart antiques dealer who called himself Konrad Fischer. In reality, his name was Konrad Kujau, and he was a skilled forger. Between 1981 and 1983, Kujau painstakingly wrote out every page himself, imitating Hitler’s handwriting with impressive accuracy.<\/p>\n

Why Did People Believe the Diaries?<\/h2>\n

The handwriting was close enough to Hitler\u2019s known writing to fool many at first glance. The backstory\u2014a dramatic plane crash, decades in hiding\u2014added to the credibility. When a respected historian vouched for the find, skepticism faded. Publishers and media outlets rushed to secure rights, eager to be part of a major historical revelation.<\/p>\n

Within about two weeks, the Bundesarchiv announced their findings: the materials were all postwar. The paper hadn\u2019t existed during Hitler\u2019s lifetime. The ink was of a modern type.
