How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Certified Handwriting Expert for Court?
The number one question we get in our office is, “How much does it cost to hire a handwriting expert?”
If someone is suing you, you’re going through a divorce, and a piece of paper shows up bearing your signature that you never agreed to, of course, you need to hire an expert. And of course, the cost depends on your situation. You may be dealing with a $4 million house, and your budget is no big deal. But you should know that it’s not a $100 problem. We have had people call and say, “Oh my goodness, I thought this was a $100 problem.” If someone forged your name on a student loan or university enrollment document and now you’re facing an $80,000 debt, this is not a small problem.
I just saw an invoice from someone who was opposing me on a case—his invoice was $4,400. He wrote a great report, very respected guy. In fact, we had the same opinion on that case, even though we were working for two different clients.
What You Should Expect to Pay
Most cases come in between $3,000 and $8,000. At least that’s true in 2026. I know, 20 years ago they were cheaper. Be cautious of any expert offering to handle an entire case for $600 to $1,000 flat. That’s a red flag. It usually means they lack courtroom experience or proper training. They just put up their own shingle and never get fully trained.
So be very careful of anyone charging below $2,000. I would be concerned about their quality. However, you don’t have to pay $20,000. It’s not necessary. Usually, it is an hourly rate, like attorneys. I know when I did one of my first TV shows, I hired an entertainment attorney at $850 an hour, and I thought, “This is crazy.” And they said, “Hey man, if you want an entertainment attorney in Hollywood, that’s what it costs.”
If you’re hiring a good attorney or a good forensic expert, you’re going to pay $400 to $800 an hour for their expertise. Don’t be surprised. You get what you pay for. There’s a certain amount of quality and experience. And if you’re dealing with a million-dollar lawsuit, you want to have the very best experts on the stand. If you have the money, hire the best. And if you don’t have the money, get the best you can afford. But when you call our office or any office, don’t be sticker-shocked to realize you’re talking about a $3,000 to $10,000 retainer fee because we’ve got to do a lot of work.
What Goes Into the Cost
In some cases, we have to go to court, take pictures, analyze those photographs, spend hours creating side-by-side demonstrative exhibits, and sometimes spend hours discussing strategy with the client or the attorney. So, it’s not a $100 problem. But it’s not a $50,000 problem either. If you’re dialing around shopping, expect to pay between $3,000 and $8,000 to handle your forensic case if there’s only one or two documents in play.
Again, that can really change. You can say, “Hey, Bart, here’s an entire book of 5,000 documents. Give me a flat rate.” That’s a lot. So, that’s the answer to the question about how much a handwriting expert costs. Shop around if you’re price-sensitive, but make sure you hire on quality because you’re investing in winning your case.
You have to ask the question, “How much is it worth to get the best expert to win my case?” If you’re saying, “I’ll save $25 an hour,” that’s myopic. That’s like hiring a discount brain surgeon. You get what you pay for, and in a high-stakes legal case, the cost of cutting corners is far greater than the money you save. Some people will get the discount brain surgeon and the discount forensic handwriting expert. Remember: you’re hiring these people to help win your case, not to save a few bucks.
